Taraba State Polytechnic Nigeria’s worst: NBTE
Taraba State Polytechnic based in Jalingo is the worst polytechnic in Nigeria at the moment, among 112 schools that the National Board for Technical Education crunched their data.
The state-owned Polytechnic is listed as No. 107th, scoring 10.7 per cent, out of a possible score of 100, in a pilot ranking just published by the NBTE.
Federal Polytechnic in Ekowe in Bayelsa State, with a score of 12.31 per cent is ranked 106th, just a shade better than Taraba Polytechnic.
Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Federal Polytechnic, Bali in Taraba, Akwa Ibom Polytechnic in Ikot Osurua, Best Solution Polytechnic, a private school in Akure Ondo State, Trinity Polytechnic in Uyo, the state-owned Institute of Technology and Management, Ugep, Cross River, also scored poorly in the ranking.
The others that got poor ranking are Bayelsa State College of Arts and Science, Elebele, Calvary Polytechnic, Owo-Oyibu in Delta and Port Harcourt Polytechnic in Rumuola in Rivers State.
According to the NBTE, the pilot ranking covered 2015/16 and 2016/17 academic years and threw up Federal Polytechnics Nekede, Imo State; Ilaro, Ogun State and Kaduna Polytechnic emerging first, second and third positions respectively.
NBTE’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Masa’udu Adamu Kazaure said the ranking was based on eleven criteria consisting of total number of programmes with full accreditation by NBTE during the last two years, percentage of programmes with full accreditation by NBTE during the last two years, proportion of academic staff showing the right mix at the departmental level for institutions i.e. Chief Lecturer, principal lecturer and its equivalent down to the Assistant Lecturer or its equivalent, ability of institutions to introduce programmes in new and emerging fields.
Others are; capacity building of staff both within and outside Nigeria, teaching quality- including staff/student ratio, teaching quality – ratio of full-time to part-time staff, availability of current Campus Master Plan, Strategic Plan and Academic Brief, percentage of Academic Staff with relevant higher qualifications and professional registration, 70:30 Technology-Non-Technology enrolment ratio and incorporation of Entrepreneurship Education into the institution’s curriculum- fully established Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC).
Some new schools listed at the bottom of the ranking got some caveat cover as the NBTE said it was unable to gather adequate data on them. Among them are Marist Polytechnic in Umuchigbo-Ije, Anambra state, Ajayi Polytechnic, Ara-Ekiti, Kalac Crystal Polytechnic, Lekki, Lagos Eastern Polytechnic, Port Harcourt.
