Plateau govt. revives 4 abandoned water treatment plants

The Commissioner for Water Resources and Energy in Plateau, Mr David Wuyep, on Tuesday, said the state government had resuscitated the four abandoned water treatment plants in the state.

Wuyep, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos, said the affected plants were located in Pankshin, Shendam, Mangu and Bokkos Local Government Areas of the state.

He noted that the resuscitated water plants had been abandoned since the past 20 years, making accessibility to potable water in the four Local Government Areas very difficult.

According to the commissioner, the rehabilitated water schemes have begun operations and potable water is now accessible in the affected communities.

Wuyep said that work had also started on the Langtang Dam, to facilitate water supply to its environs.

He said that the state government would resuscitate the small water schemes at Ba’ap, Barkin Ladi, Dengi and Wase before the end of 2018.

The commissioner said that the state government had provided 700 hand pump boreholes, to boost access to drinkable water in the rural areas; and to reduce to the barest, waterborne diseases.

“This government, since coming on board, has sunk more than 700 boreholes in various communities.

“These boreholes were sunk to ensure that those who are not yet covered under the water schemes can have access to potable water; this will reduce the occurrence of waterborne diseases,” he said.
