Chief Tony Anenih: dies at 85

President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of Chief Anthony Anenih, the ex-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Anenih is reported to have died on Sunday in Abuja.

According to Mr. Segun Adesina, spokesman to President, Buhari also commiserates with the government and people of Edo State and the PDP on the passing on of their illustrious son and former Chairman, Board of Trustees.

Buhari attested that Chief Anenih lived a life of service, as State Chairman of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), chieftain of the PDP, and a former Minister of Works.

President Buhari affirms that across the political spectrum of Nigeria, Chief Anenih was known for his strong views on issues pertaining to the unity and stability of the nation.

The President prays almighty God to grant Chief Anenih’s soul eternal rest and comfort all who mourn the octogenarian.

Reports say Anenih died at a private hospital in Abuja on Sunday.

A source close to the family, who confirmed the development but chose to remain anonymous said the children of the elder statesman would issue an official statement in Abuja soon.

The former minister of works, who lost his eldest son, Eugene, in May, 2017, after the death of his wife, Patricia, turned 85 in August.

The State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, said that the party would make its position on the matter known at the appropriate time.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Government has commiserated with the Anenih family over the death of its patriarch.

Governor Godwin Obaseki, in a statement on Sunday evening, said that the entire state was saddened by the loss.

Obaseki described the late politician as a leader who made immense contributions to the development of the state and the country.

He also said that the guidance of the deceased elder statesman would be missed, especially as the country prepared for the 2019 general elections.
