Champions League: Manchester City makes history in 2-1 loss to Lyon

Manchester City on Wednesday night made history in their 2-1 defeat to Lyon in the UEFA Champions League fixture at the Etihad Stadium.

Goals from Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir ensured that Pep Guardiola’s men suffered a shock defeat on home soil.

Bernado Silva’s lone strike was not enough to get a point for the hosts.

The defeat to the Ligue 1 side means that City became the first English team in the history of the Champions League to lose four consecutive matches, having lost to Basel at home in the second leg of their last-16 tie before suffering back-to-back losses to Liverpool in last season’s quarter-finals.

Reacting to the defeat, Man City assistant manager, Mikel Arteta lamented the loss against Lyon.

“We saw two very different halves,” Arteta said at post-match.

“We conceded many counter-attacks and at this level you get punished. In the second half we dominated and played in the opponents half and created many chances.

“I still believed we could do it. We reacted really well. On another day we could have come back. If you give cheap goals away it is difficult.

“The subs affected the game but sometimes it is too late. I was told there were two penalties in the game but I did not see clearly. It is disappointing. We are usually strong at home. Now you have to go and win away from home.”
