Youths are my backbone, says NCP presidential candidate

Presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party (NCP), Dr. Tanko Yunusa, has described the youth as his backbone.He disclosed this in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary and Director of Publications, Dr. Emmanuel Okereke, as the party braces up for the general election in February.

NCP, which held its presidential primary at Grace Point Resort Hotel, Abuja, on October 6, in which Yunusa scored 72 votes, is part of the about 40-member Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).Yunusa’s closest rival, John Ntan, polled 57 while Festus Obeghe got four votes.

According to Yunusa, it was a case of no victor no vanquished, as every member of the party won.“Everybody is a winner in the NCP. The foremost task of the most vital and living traditions of socialism, as fully and ably represented by the NCP, is precisely to collectively sensitise the abandoned, suffering masses and provide that missing instrument of rapid, affirmative, peoples-driven change powered by the youths; a clear-cut paradigm shift from the downbeat median.

“Therefore, in this social contract with Nigerians, the youths are my backbone,” he stated.The primary election was hugely successful, despite earlier allegations that some parts of the country wanted to hijack the party founded by Chief Gani Fawehinmi, the fiery lawyer and acclaimed Senior Advocate of the Masses (SAM).

NCP delegates across the country last weekend gathered in Abuja to choose Yunusa, the party’s national chairman, over other aspirants.
One of the aspirants, the cerebral human rights’ activist and lawyer, Ntan, openly showed gallantry in defeat.NCP is peopled by lawyers, activists and others who admire the political philosophies of Gani.
