Liberia vs Nigeria: 3 things we learnt as Super Eagles win in Monrovia

On Monday night, the Super Eagles beat their Liberian counterparts 2-1, in what turned out to be an exhibition game.

The game, played at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex, was arranged in honour of the country’s president and 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year, George Weah.

Henry Onyekuru and Simeon ‘Simy’ Nwankwo scored Nigeria’s goals in the first half, before Kpah Sherman pulled one back for the hosts from the penalty spot in the second half.

So what 3 things did we learn from the game?

1. Weah still got it: The night was all about Weah. The former AC Milan and Monaco striker showed glimpses from the past and even lasted more than 70 minutes on the pitch. His no.14 shirt has now been rested for the national team.

2. Onyekuru, a rising star: If Samuel Kalu was man of the match against Seychelles, then Onyekuru was the standout player in the green and white against Liberia. The forward, who partnered Simy upfront, brought purpose, pace and flair to the Eagles’ attack.

3. Messy logistics: From the game being moved from 7pm to about 8.40pm, to it not being aired on TV, it seemed this match was not properly planned. It is perhaps understandable, especially it was hurriedly fixed, after Nigeria’s friendly against Saudi Arabia was cancelled. But then, logistics could be better for a game that had a president involved.
