A 15 year old former child bride, Miss Chikwendu, whose story went viral in January this year has returned to school.
Chikwendu’s forced marriage made news rounds and gained widespread condemnation online and offline after a facebook user shared her story. Chikwendu was forced by her family to marry an older man named Izuchukwu Igwilo.
Following the public condemnation, the state Commissioner For Women and Children affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, swooped into action and the teenager was retrieved form the Igwilos. She was rehabilitated, trained in tailoring and empowered with other 100 Ndi Anambra by Industrial Training Fund, ITF.
Concluding the process of healing and rehabilitation, Chinwendu was today accompanied by the Honorable Commissioner, her elderly father and some staff of the ministry of women and children affairs to the school where she will continue with her education.
