Manchester City’s Guardiola makes Champions League vow after losing to Lyon
Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola has vowed to make his team ‘better’ on the heels of their 2-1 loss to Lyon in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League fixture at the Etihad Stadium.
Goals from Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir ensured that Pep Guardiola’s men suffered a shock defeat on home soil.
Bernado Silva’s lone strike was not enough to get a point for the hosts.
Guardiola, who was forced to watch from the stands, promised to find a way to make City more solid and better compared to their last two Champions League seasons.
“The players don’t have to apologise. Why should they?,” Guardiola was quoted by Manchester Evening News as saying ahead of City’s clash with Cardiff in the Premier League on Saturday.
“They ran, they fought, tried to make a comeback. The competition punishes the mistakes. We made a lot of mistakes.
“But they don’t have to apologise. I was banned, I have to accept it.”
“We didn’t play badly,” he said, adding that, “It wasn’t the best but it wasn’t bad.
“In the first half it was a little bit slow. It’s that competition.
“I insisted many times that it’s completely different to the Premier League. It’s so demanding.
“Physicality is not just in the Premier League. It’s so hard in terms of the levels of the teams.”
“We have to learn to try and play these games – I need to help the team better than I did in the past.
“We made an exceptional group stage two years ago, and we were able to make a lot of changes last season.
“I have to find a way to be more solid. The teams are so good. It doesn’t matter who you play.
“I saw Hoffenheim versus Shakhtar and they are so good. We have to prepare,” Guardiola said.
