Improve quality of care drives uptake of family planning in Lagos—Omasanjuwa

State Team Lead, Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative, NURHI 2, Dr. Edun Omasanjuwa has called for sustainability and scale up of the successes recorded by Lagos State in area of promoting access to quality reproductive healthcare.

Omasanjuwa who spoke at the Annual Strategic Review Meeting of NURHI 2 Year 3 in Lagos, said that sustaining and improving quality family planning services through availability of competent and qualified service providers will help to improve the health of the family and creation of better future for upcoming generation.

He explained that NURHI 2 intervention in area of capacity building, improving provision access to quality care and improved physical environment for service delivery through ‘72-Hour Clinic Makeover’ have helped to drive uptake of family planning.

We trained 92 Community Health Extension Worker on family planning methods, 667 clinical & non clinical providers  trained on IPCC, 65 NURHI 2 supported have counselling tools, 50 HVS have Providers trained on CLMS and 455 CPs/PMs/TBAs trained among other interventions

“Some of our interventions in area of service delivery, advocacy and demand generation have witnessed a total of 186,754 acceptances of contraceptive methods in NURHI supported site in Lagos State.

“44,935 family planning clients were recorded in year one; 69,196 in year two and 72,623 embraced contraceptives methods in year three.

Omasanjuwa however called for community ownership and increased funding of family planning in the state, “There is need for absorption of community mobilisers into LGA community mobilization system.

“There is need for increased funding of family planning in the state, capacity building of key stakeholders as core trainers on budget tracking and analysis. Key leadership involvement in Faith-based FP advocacy.”

Omasanjuwa stated that the whole essence of their activities was to ensure that every pregnancy is by choice and not by chance, “ensure every pregnancy is safe, and indeed a blessing for what is intended for.

“We are here for women whose next pregnancy is a threat, we are here for that unknown family that is struggling to breakout from generation circle of poverty. We are here to contribute our own quota to the building of Lagos State economy and create a better future for upcoming generation through family planning. So our commitment was to support the CPR of Lagos by 12 percent.

In a swift reaction, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Lagos, Dr Modele Osunkiyesi who was represented by the Director Reproductive Health, Dr. Saidat Okaga commended NURHI for their support in the state’s mandate to actualize 74 percent CPR target. “I could recall that at the entry point in 2015, NURHI 2 adopted strategy to increase acceptance of long lasting method and trained family planning providers at our facility, renovated our family planning unit and they have done excellently well in this area.

“They also support our LGAs with family planning consumables during their outreach. We all know that family planning is a proving tool for reducing maternal mortality and in Lagos State we have zero tolerance for maternal mortality. NURHI 2 supported our Lagos state advocacy group in advocating budgetary allocation for family planning, initiate and sponsor a lot of family planning education and capacity building programmes. We are going to support NURHI 2 in the year three of their programme.

Speaking during the formal launch of NURHI 2 Project’s 72-Hour Makeover Compendium, Portfolio Director for Family Planning, Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, Dr. Mojisola Odeku said that NURHI 2 project aimed to support Lagos State to develop its people.

“You know Lagos is very strategic in Nigeria map, and they have developed blue print called Family Planning Costed Implementation Plan which had different segments out of which NURHI 2 is supporting in area of technical assistance.
