The Obi of Issele-Uku Kingdom, Aniocha Local Government Area of Delta State, HRM Agbogidi Obi Nduka has decried the eroding of African tradition by foreign cultures, and advocated measures to prevent the extinction of local values.

Obi Nduka, who spoke to journalists on Wednesday in his palace to herald the annual commemoration of the Ine festival, also lamented that involvement of youths in crimes capable of jeopardizing their future and called on them to eschew whatever that will take them to crimes.

Noting that the glory of the community lies in the unfettered adherence to its rich culture, the traditional ruler explained that if properly funded, its cultural heritage would attract tourism and more economic dividends to the state.

He disclosed that activities for the In-Aho festival which started in August 2018 would run through September to October, adding that it will be preceded by the spiritual purification of the town from evil and be concluded with the Ihu-Onicha ceremony.

According to him, “We are committed to preserving our cultural heritage despite the influx of foreign culture which has eroded the cultures of some of the communities, and at the same time, we are willing to project this culture to the world, with modernization and globalization. We see the need to create, add value and importance to our festival, and we are striving towards achieving this goal, especially by targeting the youths with specialized programmes that will be put in place as the festival draws nearer with large number of people attending”.

The monarch assures that the ceremony would be devoid of rancor and violence as he urged residents of the community to abide by the traditional demands, stressing that adequate security apparatus has been put in place to tackle any agenda aimed at disrupting the peace and tranquility of the community during the period.

He commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for his developmental strides in Issele-Uku and other parts of the state, even as he said: “I must say that I am lucky to have come at a time when such an ordained and passionate leader is on the saddle of the state” even as he attributed his successes as a monarch to the unalloyed support from his subjects.
