So we all know the Nigerian economy has been in some real mess for years now, poverty is getting stronger, and with the rate at which people give birth in the country poverty keeps spreading.

Too bad.Some states are down to poverty by 70 percent. However, these poor states in Nigeria became poor due to bad governance, mismanagement of state resources or security issues as the case may be.We have listed seven poorest states in Nigeria using their IGR / debts, population, infrastructural development, state of economy, literacy level, security and governance to compile this list of poorest states in Nigeria.

List Of The Poorest States in Nigeria 2018

1. Sokoto state
Many times this state have been rated as the poorest state in Nigeria, ranking 81.2% on poverty level.

2. Kastina state
Located at the deepest part of the north western area of Nigeria, Kastina state made it in the list of poorest states in Nigeria because it has fewer or no solid investment or sector that generates revenue for the state.

3. Adamawa state
Sad to see, due to the frequent attack fromBoko Haram terrorists, Adamawa state’s economy has crippled as a result of its citizens running away from the state because of safety.It has affected the state poorly to a povertylevel of 74.2%.

4. Gombe state
Gombe state is one of the Nigerian states located at the north-eastern part of Nigeria is also facing its own peril in security with crippled economy to a 73.2% poverty level.

5. Jigawa state
A state situated at the north-western part of Nigeria and basically populated with the Hausa/Fulani tribe.With low literacy level and low economic growth, the poverty level of Jigawa state is at 72.1%.

6. Plateau state
This state is one of the most populated state in Nigeria and has some tourist attractions, It has also suffered a long timely tribal conflict which has carelessly destroyed its economy by 71%.

7. Ebonyi state
Unfortunately this is the only state in the South-East that falls under the top poorest states in Nigeria with poverty rate of 70.6% due to poverty, illiteracy and bad government.

8. Bauchi
In Hausa the word Bauchi meansthe land of freedom and tourism.However recent Boko Haram adventures inthe area, though few, have driven tourists away from the area.

9. Kebbi
It is bordered by Sokoto State,Niger State,Dosso Regionin the Republic of Nigerand the nation of Benin.The recently concluded Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport (SABIA), stands out asone of Nigeria’s most sophisticated airports and is expected to boost the state’s economy.

10. Zamfara
Recently the governor was blasted for the “alarming scope of economic dangers and its potential threat to the economic development of the state,” by the Zamfara Budget Working Group.

States With The Lowest Poverty Rate In Nigeria

Niger is the state with the lowest poverty rate which is 33.8%. It was followed by Osun (37.9%) and Ondo (45.7%).

Bayelsa (47%) and Lagos (48.6%) have lessthan 50% poverty rate.The average poverty rate in the Northwest geopolitical zone is 71.4%, which remainedthe highest in the said area.

It is followed by the Northeast region which has 69.1% and the North central region which has 60.7%.

Poverty was least dominant in the Southwest (49.8%), South-South (55.5%), and South-East regions (59.5%).
