The Minna, Niger State-based Utaka Foundation team represented Nigeria in the SATUC World Cup, which is a five-a-side championship held in Bulgaria for underprivileged youth from across the world. The team thrashed Liberia 4-0 to emerge the winner of the second edition of the tournament organised for the kids within the age of 16 years.

To be the best out of 16 teams that participated in the competition, Nigeria whitewashed Syria 7-1 in the first match, thrashed Morocco 4-2 in the second match, beat Cameroun 7-0 in the quarterfinal match, defeated hosts Bulgaria1-0 in the semifinal before smashing Liberia 4-0 in the final.

The Niger State governor, who is currently out of the country, sent his Commissioner for Sports Development, Emmanuel Danjuma Duza to officially welcome the victorious team at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja.

At the mini reception at the Abuja Airport, Duza stated, “I am standing here on behalf of my boss, Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State who sent me to receive this victorious team that went to Bulgaria and conquered all oppositions to emerge champions of the world.

“Niger State is proud of this team, and Nigeria is proud of the team too for making us proud. This victorious team will surely be honoured and celebrated when my boss, Governor Abubakar Bello is back from abroad. We will encourage and also motivate them more. This is the first time Nigeria is participating in the tournament and the team won its second edition.”
